Hard to believe that I have been to the same place as that most recent review.

I have been a number of times in the last 6 months and have never failed to receive courtesy and a decent meal. The food takes a while, which I don't mind if it means that it's freshly cooked, but tastes delicious with lovely presentation. Thanks.

Awful experience. Waited 1 hour 30 minutes for food that did not arrive. When dared to ask what was happening, was met by a torrent of abuse by owners.

In the local area they are well known for it apparently.

Avoid this establishment at all costs.

A decent pub on just-about all criteria. The food quality has improved a lot since the head chef bought out the previous landlord. There's usually 3 or 4 real ales on (some local brews e.g. Kelham Island).

It's family-friendly without having the feel of being kid-dominated. Food-centred, but certainly not a dreaded 'gastropub'.

There's often some unobtrusive live acoustic music on to accompany the diners. Nice ambience. Great views at the back and on the patio.

    All in all... 8.5 / 10.

We went here after reading a review in Grapevine saying what a great place it was. Bad idea!

It definitely wasn't 'home cooked', and the two of us who ordered from the Indian Buffet (all you can eat) were dismayed to find that in fact there was almost nothing left to eat. The staff weren't particularly apologetic or helpful about this, and the food we did get was very average formula pub-grub.

Two pieces of advice. Don't eat here, and don't trust Grapevine reviews.

News for Three Merry Lads:

  • The Three Merry Lads reopened its doors this weekend after a surprising closure and repossession earlier this year. The pub, located on Redmires Road, Lodge Moor, had been sealed off with re-possession notices and large orange barriers blocking access to its car park since April. However, new licensees Damian Chapman and Heather Marsden are now breathing new life into this iconic venue.

Damian and Heather have ambitious plans to make the Three Merry Lads a cornerstone of the community once more. They envision a family-friendly establishment that welcomes everyone, including four-legged friends. The pub will offer complimentary water bowls and treats for dogs, emphasising its inclusive and welcoming atmosphere.

In anticipation of the grand reopening, the new management duo were hard at work. They have refreshed the pub’s interior with a fresh coat of paint, revitalised the large garden, and ensured that the children's play area is fully operational. These efforts underscore their commitment to creating a community-oriented space.

The Three Merry Lads officially reopened at 11:30AM on 6th July. Initially, the pub is serving drinks only, with a wide selection of premium beers, wines, and spirits available. Cask ales, a speciality of the pub, will feature prominently alongside barista-quality coffee served throughout the day.

The introduction of food service is planned for later in the week, with exact details to be announced on the pub’s Facebook page. The menu will focus on freshly prepared homemade pub classics, including pies and Sunday roasts, promising a delicious and hearty dining experience for visitors.

Damian and Heather are eager to integrate community feedback into their ongoing plans for the pub. They aim to introduce a variety of activities and events designed to engage and entertain patrons. Planned events include quiz nights, live music performances, a summer family fun day, monthly senior citizens' dinners featuring nostalgic music, and charity fundraisers supporting local causes such as The Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice.

Damian expressed his gratitude for the community's warm reception, stating, "We've been blown away by the response we've had from the community and all their good wishes. We can't wait to open the doors and meet everyone. We want to restore The Three Merry Lads to the heart of the community and we'll be canvassing people to find out what they would like to see."

Chris Carratt, the area manager for Star Pubs, praised the new licensees, saying, "Damian and Heather are experienced licensees and are passionate about creating a great pub that everyone can enjoy. We wish them all the best!"

To mark the reopening, the Three Merry Lads screened the Euros on its two televisions on Saturday, providing a perfect opportunity for sports fans to gather and enjoy the action in a lively, communal setting.

  • The Three Merry Lads, a popular pub on Redmires Road in Lodge Moor, has been shut down following the repossession of the building by the owner. The pub, known for being one of the highest in Sheffield at around 300 metres and en route to the Pennines, has ceased operations due to the end of its lease.

Legal notices displayed on the pub's windows, issued by Punch Partnerships' solicitors, indicate that the building's landlord has re-entered the premises according to the lease terms, resulting in its forfeiture. The notice further specifies that the premises have been secured, prohibiting any unauthorised entry.

In addition to the building's repossession, heavy-duty orange barriers have been placed at the car park entrance to prevent vehicle access. The previous pub manager was given a deadline to remove all belongings, which has since passed, and remaining items will be disposed of appropriately.

The Three Merry Lads dates back to 1836 and is named after the Marsden family's sons. This closure leaves The Sportsman as the only remaining pub in the vicinity, which recently reopened after a closure following the death of its former landlady.
